Insect bites can strike unexpectedly. There are many around us that can bite or sting during the barbecue season, such as bees, ants, fleas, beetles, gnats, mosquitoes and wasps. However, most of these don't bother us unless we bother them, but knowing what to do if an incident happens is always helpful

The moment of a bite can be painful, but it may not always be. Often an allergic reaction follows the venom, which is transferred to the skin through the insect's mouth or sting. Severe swelling, sores or pain are signs that the bite is serious and needs specialist care.

Most bites and stings cause nothing more than minor discomfort, but some people may develop a severe allergy. What's more, there are many people who can't stop biting, and so a bug bite can even scratch the blood. This, in turn, creates an opportunity for bacteria to gain access and cause a fester.

Many bites disappear within a few hours or days if they are consciously soothed

Insect bites and how to deal with them

At summer gatherings, insects can be repelled by candles containing essential oils, but often not enough

Make your own mosquito repellent:

  • spray bottle
  • water
  • essential oil

Pour a spray bottle full of water and add a few drops of essential oil. Don't overdo it, as a large amount of essential oil can irritate the skin and mucous membranes. Lemongrass, lavender and peppermint essential oils are good for repelling mosquitoes. Shake well and your natural mosquito repellent is ready.

In the absence of essential oil, you can take a plant that contains it and make a strong brew. For example, ironweed, which grows almost everywhere

Lots of bites all over your body? Oatmeal bath comes to the rescue. Sprinkle 1 cup of oatmeal or ground oats into a tub filled with warm water. Soak in the oat bath for 20 minutes, occasionally rubbing the oatmeal into irritated areas.

Easier way is to grab the herbal butter Cupik SOS Oil, a natural insect repellent. Helps soothe and reduce the irritation, redness and swelling associated with insect bites.

Apply the oil to the area of skin with insect bites, rub in until fully absorbed. Suitable for the body as well as the face and feet and can be used several times a day as needed.
